Addition and Subtraction

Addition and Subtraction are so important in Year 3. Consolidation of work covered in Year 2 is important and links with Place Value. However, moving on to formal (column) methods of both addition and subtraction, when the pupil is ready, is the ultimate goal. Children can use lots of different ways to add and subtract in Year 3 - Number lines, Place value charts, concrete resources (objects that they can count) or a formal written method. Mental Maths is also really important - practising adding and subtracting numbers without writing anything down. Number bonds (adding pairs of numbers to make 10, 20, 100) are great to help this.
