Welcome to Lower Key Stage 2

Our Lower Key Stage 2 setup brings together a dedicated Year 3 class, a dedicated Year 4 class, and a joint Year 3/4 class. As children move out of Key Stage 1, this flexible structure helps them build independence, deepen their subject knowledge, and thrive within a supportive, collaborative community.

How Lower Key Stage 2 Works

Consistent & Ambitious Curriculum: Teachers across all three classes plan together to deliver the Lower Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. Whether in a single-age or mixed-age class, all pupils cover the same core knowledge, skill progressions, and engaging topic themes.
Targeted Core Subject Interventions: Similar to our approach in Key Stage 1, we regularly group children fluidly across the year groups for core skills interventions — such as reading skills, spelling, or maths support—ensuring gaps are identified and filled at the earliest opportunity.

Building Peer Leadership: In our mixed Year 3/4 class, Year 3 pupils benefit from the maturity and routines modelled by older peers, while Year 4 pupils gain confidence and self-esteem by acting as leaders and helpers in the classroom.
Smooth Transitions: Moving from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2 is a big step. Working closely as a three-class team allows us to share specialist teaching, run joint events, and ensure every child feels secure and confident as their learning becomes more independent.

Maple Class (Year 3)

Year 3 marks the start of Key Stage 2 and an exciting transition into more independent learning. Our children continue to explore a wide range of subjects while building resilience, curiosity, and confidence.

Aspen Class (Year 3/4)
Taught by Miss Dinsdale and supported by Mrs Mitchell

Our mixed Year 3/4 class provides a nurturing learning environment that supports children as they progress through lower Key Stage 2.

Yew Tree Class (Year 4)
Taught by Miss Hodgson

Year 4 allows children to deepen their knowledge, gain confidence, and take on greater responsibility in their learning.

Miss Lacey is the HLTA that works across the Year group.

Newsletters

News letters will be sent home every half term detailing PE times, other important announcements and curriculum details.

Homework

Regular reading at home is the most important element, helping children develop vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and a lifelong enjoyment of books.
Short practice tasks such as learning spellings support children in applying accurate spelling in their writing.
Practising times tables and key number facts helps children build fluency and confidence in mathematics.
Occasional theme-based ‘learning log’ tasks may be set to encourage creativity, curiosity and independent research linked to the class topic.
