Music Curriculum at Greenhill Primary School

At Greenhill Primary, our music curriculum is designed to provide a rich, engaging, and progressive musical education for all pupils, aligned with the National Curriculum for Music. We use the Sing Up scheme, a comprehensive resource developed by subject specialists, to support our teaching and ensure high-quality classroom music activities from Nursery through to Year 6.

A Solid Foundation for Musical Development

Sing Up Music offers a complete and detailed scheme of work for each year group, from Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2. It sets out the essential skills, knowledge, and understanding that children should acquire at each stage of their musical journey. The curriculum covers the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (Expressive Arts) and the National Curriculum for Music, including suggested approaches from the Model Music Curriculum (covering Singing, Listening, Composing, and Performance/Instrumental Performance).

A Diverse Range of Musical Experiences

Our curriculum incorporates a broad and diverse repertoire, embracing various musical traditions, styles, and approaches. Sing Up supports a fully integrated approach to musical development, connecting the interrelated strands of:

  • Singing
  • Playing Instruments
  • Improvising
  • Composing
  • Listening and Appraising

This interconnected approach helps pupils develop confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation of music.

Connecting to the National Curriculum

Our music programme at Greenhill aligns seamlessly with the National Curriculum for Music, ensuring that our pupils meet the statutory requirements while exploring the joy and richness of music. For more details about the national curriculum for primary music education, visit the Department for Education's Music Curriculum.

Connecting to the Greenhill thread

At Greenhill Primary, our music curriculum is woven into the Greenhill Thread, our overarching approach to creating a cohesive and meaningful learning journey from Nursery to Year 6. This integrated with other subjects and themes, making learning more engaging and relevant for our pupils.

What makes our curriculum truly rich and exciting is its diversity—covering a wide range of musical styles, cultures, and traditions—encouraging children to explore, perform, and appreciate music from around the world. The combination of carefully planned lessons, engaging resources from Sing Up, and a focus on creativity ensures that every child experiences the joy of making music, developing skills, and building confidence in a supportive environment.

Through this interconnected approach, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music and foster a deeper understanding of its role in our wider learning and personal development.
