Reception Open Evenings
Starting school in a Reception class at Greenhill Primary School is an exciting milestone, and parents can take confidence in the quality of early years provision the school offers. In its most recent inspection, Ofsted judged Greenhill’s early years provision to be Good, noting that children “get off to a great start” and that the school’s warm ethos and strong pastoral support underpin pupils’ development.
In Reception, children’s progress is assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, with the goal of achieving a Good Level of Development (GLD) by the end of the year. The GLD is awarded when children meet the expected Early Learning Goals in the prime areas — communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development — and also attain the expected levels in aspects of literacy and mathematics.
As your child begins in Reception, they will engage in a carefully balanced mix of play, guided learning, and structured routines designed to nurture curiosity, confidence, and foundational skills. Teachers will observe your child across all seven areas of learning (prime and specific) — for example, through storytelling, number games, creative play, exploring the world, and physical activity — and use those observations to tailor support. Over time, as children grow in independence and confidence, they are guided toward developing the skills and dispositions they need for Year 1 while being supported at their own pace.
