Sports Premium
What is the PE & Sport Premium?
Since April 2013, the government has provided extra funding – the PE & Sport Premium – to primary schools across England. Its purpose is to help schools improve how they teach physical education (PE), broaden opportunities for sport and physical activity, and ensure children benefit from a healthy, active lifestyle.
The funding is “ring-fenced”, meaning it can only be used for PE, sport and physical activity provision, and not for general school running costs.
How we use our funding at Greenhill Primary School
We allocate our premium with the following aims:
-
To continue developing the quality of PE teaching, through staff training and professional development, so that our lessons become ever more engaging and effective.
-
To ensure our PE provision is consistently rated as “good” or better (including via external monitoring where appropriate).
-
To offer a broader and richer range of sporting opportunities and experiences for children — so that every pupil, regardless of ability or background, can find something they enjoy and can take part in.
-
To increase the number of children participating in extra-curricular sport and physical activities outside the normal curriculum.
-
To help children develop a lifelong love of sport and regular physical activity, supporting their health, fitness, wellbeing and self-confidence.
-
To provide opportunities for children to compete in sport, whether within school, between schools or through local clubs.
-
To support children who show particular aptitude or interest in a specific sport and wish to progress further.
What this looks like in practice at Greenhill
We deliver this in a variety of ways. For example:
-
Children have access to many sports across the school year, including golf, kayaking, swimming, tennis, football, netball, dance, gymnastics and athletics.
-
We work in partnership with external organisations such as Leeds Rhinos to bring fresh coaching, opportunities and inspiration into school.
-
We ensure that children who are already showing talent in sport are supported to access club-level opportunities, including national clubs and teams when appropriate.
-
In terms of swimming: in the 2024-25 academic year, 54 % of our Year 6 pupils left the school able to swim 25 metres or more. We are very proud of this figure as many were unable to do so at the start of Year 4.
Why this matters for your child
-
Regular physical activity supports children’s health, mood, focus and overall well-being.
-
Learning a range of sports and physical activities gives children choices, helps them find what they enjoy and builds confidence.
-
Through competition and team sport, children learn life skills such as resilience, teamwork, leadership and self-belief.
-
By investing in teacher skills and sustained programmes, we ensure that the benefits of this funding last beyond a single lesson or term – it becomes part of the school culture.
