Sustainability
🌱 Sustainability at Greenhill Primary School
At Greenhill Primary School, we believe every child should grow up understanding and respecting the world around them. From saving energy to protecting wildlife, we are committed to helping our pupils become responsible, environmentally conscious citizens of the future.
📘 Our Vision
We are proud to support the UK Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. This means we are working towards:
-
Reducing our school’s carbon footprint
-
Supporting nature and biodiversity
-
Preparing children to thrive in a changing world
Our approach isn’t just about one-off activities—it’s about weaving sustainability into everything we do, from how we teach to how we run our school.

🏫 Whole-School Action
We are taking practical steps to make sustainability part of daily school life. These include:
✅ A Climate Action Plan
We are currently developing a Climate Action Plan to guide how we reduce energy use, waste, and emissions across the school.
✅ A Sustainability Lead
A dedicated member of our staff is our Sustainability Lead, helping to coordinate and grow our eco-initiatives.
✅ Eco-Monitoring Tools
We use Energy Sparks, a free platform that helps us monitor our energy use and involve pupils in finding ways to save electricity and reduce waste.
✅ Eco-Schools Programme
We are proud to be part of the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme, involving pupils in environmental reviews, action planning, and positive change.
📚 Sustainability in the Curriculum
Sustainability isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we teach and experience across many subjects:
-
Science – children explore ecosystems, materials, energy, and environmental changes
-
Geography – pupils learn about climate, weather, land use, and global environmental issues
-
Cross-Curricular Links – eco-topics are linked into writing, art, design, and more
-
Outdoor Learning – we make the most of our school grounds and green spaces to learn about nature, wildlife, and seasonal changes
Our curriculum supports the national aim to increase climate literacy and help children develop the knowledge and skills needed to care for the planet.
🌿 Outdoor & Community Projects
We encourage hands-on experiences that connect pupils with the environment. Recent projects include:
-
Tree planting and litter picks
-
Wildlife garden design
-
Recycling campaigns
-
Participation in the National Education Nature Park – where pupils help map and improve biodiversity on school grounds
🔭 Looking Ahead
We are committed to ongoing improvement and staying up to date with national developments. This includes:
-
Supporting the Teach the Future campaign for stronger climate education
-
Welcoming future curriculum changes to increase environmental learning
-
Collaborating with families and the wider community to make a difference together
💬 Get Involved
We know that sustainability starts at home too! Parents and carers can help by:
-
Supporting children with eco-homework
-
Walking or cycling to school
-
Donating unwanted clothes, toys, and books
-
Volunteering for green projects at school
If you have ideas or would like to help, please contact our Sustainability Lead via the school office.
